
Many artists have more than one release in a year, so having just the year in metadata isn't enough if you want to know what was released first.

I've always used the file timestamp, even without knowing the full release date. It does grab the year, and uses this value for the metadata field (id3=TDRC, flac=YEAR), hadn't thought of modifying the file timestamps.
